
Rydberg atoms as quantum platforms
QTI is also investigating Rydberg atoms and ions as controllable quantum systems within CERN’s antimatter programme. These activities focus on the formation and study of hydrogen-like Rydberg ions for precision measurements and tests of QED in the strong-field regime, while simultaneously developing technologies and expertise relevant for quantum platforms and qubit development. The programme combines atomic physics, antimatter research, laser systems, ion trapping, and cryogenic technologies.
Current work includes: commissioning of ion and anion sources, trapping and cooling studies, preparation for co-trapping with antiprotons and development of laser excitation systems. These activities contribute to the broader effort of connecting quantum control techniques with future antimatter experiments and precision measurements at CERN.
